Description:

The US 101 Corridor is approximately 32 miles in length
(mile post 242.61 to 274.65), extending from SR 112 (Laird's
Corner) east through the cities of Port Angeles and Sequim
to the Clallam County Line, just east of Chicken Coop Road.

1068 collisions occurred during the
period between January 2000 and December 2002.36
of these collisions, approximately three and a
half percent (3.5%) involved fatal or disabling injuries and
51 or five percent (5%) were alcohol related.

The majority
of crashes occurred during daylight hours
(81%), during clear weather (70%) and dry roadway conditions
(78%)
-
The month of December had the highest
number of collisions, with October having the second
highest. The month of March had the lowest
number of crashes.

Crashes were fairly evenly distributed
during the week with Monday having the lowest number
of crashes and Saturday the highest.

The peak hours
for crashes was 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM
Significant Characteristics of Crashes:

Rear-end, Angle, Hit Fixed Object and Wildlife
are the leading types of collisions.

Hit Fixed Object
is the leading type of fatal and disabling injury collision.

Following
too Close, Failing to Yield, Exceeding Safe
Speed and Improper Turn are the leading contributing causes
of collisions.

Following
too Close crashes occurred at a rate
29% higher than on similar highways in the region.

Failing to Yield crashes occur at a rate 33% higher
than on similar highways in the region.

Improper Turn
crashes occur at a rate 100% higher than on similar
highways in the region.
-
Failing to Yield is the leading
contributing cause of fatal and disabling crashes at
a rate 31% higher than on similar highways in the region.
