About the Program

Completed Projects

Description:

  • The SR 26 Corridor consists of an approximate 20-mile section extending from the Adams County line to a point just east of Othello (mile post 33.47 to 50.83).

  • The project kicked off on November 18, 2004.

  • The traffic load ranges from 1,600 to 5,300 vehicles per day. The traffic is comprised of local, agricultural, long-distance commuter and recreational traffic.

  • Available data indicates that 98 crashes occurred during the three-year period January, 2000 – December, 2002. Thirteen percent (13%) of those crashes involved fatalities or disabling injuries.

  • The  majority of crashes (73%) occur during clear, dry weather and during daylight hours (55%).

  • The fall months have the highest number of crashes.

  • Mondays and Fridays have the highest numbers of crashes, and Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays have the lowest, but the peak hours for crashes are scattered throughout the day

Significant Characteristics of Crashes:

  • Failing to Yield, Under the Influence of Alcohol, Improper Passing and Disregarding a Stop Sign are the leading causes of all crashes. All occur at rates much higher than on other similar roads in the region.

  • Failing to Yield is the cause of crashes at a rate 72% higher, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol at a rate 164% higher, Improper Passing at a rate 186% higher and Disregarding a Stop Sign 358% higher than similar highways in the region.

  • Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol is the leading cause of Fatal and Disabling crashes.

  • Angle Crashes, Overturns and Head-On are the leading types of crashes.
